A Great Civil War: A Military and Political History is written in smooth but not especially compelling style. I enjoyed reading it because the military history of the Civil War is among my favorite subjects, but I cannot honestly recommend this book as superior to previous one-volume histories, most notably McPherson's Battle Cry of by:   In the preface to this one-volume "History of the Civil War " he states that this is not an "abridgement" of his prior work, but rather was a "fresh" study.
